A TV drama based on the Halo sci-fi series of videogames will film in Budapest from this autumn for US network Showtime.
The story is set in the 26th century and follows soldier Master Chief – whose face is always concealed under a helmet in the games – in a war between humanity and an alien race.
Pablo Schreiber and Yerin Ha are set to star.
Halo was first launched on games console Xbox in 2001 and in the years since multiple videogame sequels and spinoffs have been released.
Kyle Killen and Steven Kane are co-showrunners and executive producers on the drama, while Otto Bathurst will direct several of the nine episodes that have been commissioned.
Showtime’s production will be just the latest live-action screen adaptation of a Halo story. A previous series was launched in 2012 following a shoot in Canadian production hub Vancouver, and a separate drama filmed in Northern Ireland and Iceland for online releases in 2015.
Budapest is a European production hub and in recent years has hosted shoots including TV dramas The Terror and The Alienist.
Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is one of the high-profile repeat visitors to Hungary. He shot Blade Runner 2049 in Budapest and has returned this year for a new film adaptation of sci-fi story Dune.
