Canadian production entity Whites Studios has announced plans to open its first Toronto stages in January 2020.
Whites Studios Edwards Blvd will offer four stages and assorted production office space across around 150,000 sq ft of space, with another 35,000 sq ft of room for various support services including wardrobe and mill facilities.
“Whites Studios has been searching for a prime property offering in Toronto for over a year,” said Paul Bronfman, chairman and CEO of Whites.
“Production in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) is thriving, but we need significant studio space to keep this momentum in industry growth. Whites is dedicated to providing solutions and tools for the creative visions of our partners in production.”
Whites Studios is building on its Canadian production presence, which already includes five separate sites in Vancouver.
The company is part of major Canadian production equipment supplier William F White International.
Toronto is one of the busiest production hubs in North America and its studio infrastructure and filming incentive support makes it hugely popular for Hollywood film and TV shoots.
Earlier this year Netflix announced it would be creating a new ‘production hub’ in Toronto by arranging long-term leases of multiple sound stages at Pinewood Toronto Studios and Cinespace Film Studios.
Toronto remains under pressure to continue developing its studio infrastructure, particularly given that many stages are booked on a long-term basis for TV shoots.
