SF Studios has announced Kingmaker, a sequel to 2004's Danish film King's Game, has now entered production.
The political thriller is helmed by by Mikkel Serup, whose TV credits include: Livvagterne (2009-2010), Pros and Cons (2018-2020) and The Chestnut Man (2021), as well as features The Reunion 2 – The Funeral (2014) and Pound for Pound (2017).
Kingmaker is an adaptation of Niels Krause-Kjær’s second novel Mørkeland, which centres on the adventures of an investigative journalist, Ulrik Torp. “But Kingmaker is only a sequel for those who want to see it that way. As a story, it stands alone as a topical and gripping political thriller about the state of democracy,” said SF Studios in a press release.
The sequel sees the return of lead star Anders W Berthelsen (Erna at War) as journalist Ulrik Torp, together with Nicolas Bro (The Kingdom Exodus, Riders of Justice) and Charlotte Munck (Kamikaze), who reprise their original roles.
Rounding out the cast are: Patrick A Hansen, Sofie Nolsøe, Mathilde Arcel Fock, Simon Kongsted, Mathilde Eusebius, Ellaha Lack, Mohamed Djeziri, Sara Fanta, Lene Maria Christensen (starring as politician Anne-Grethe Hulsig), Tommy Kenter (portraying businessman Otto Brathenberg) and Ina-Miriam Rosenbaum (playing the editor Best Bente).
The script has been penned by Marie Østerbye, and is produced by Sara Namer and Morten Kjems Hytten Juhl at Meta Film. It is executive produced by Meta Film’s Louise Foldager. SF Studios distributes the film in the Nordics.
The initial film was a local blockbuster, selling over 550,000 tickets in Danish cinemas.
