Production gets underway in Wales today, July 29, on a feature film adaptation of Maggie O'Farrel's novel Hamnet starring Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley.
Chloe Zhao, who directed Marvel's Eternals and Searchlight's Nomad, for which she won an Academy Award, is directing from a screenplay she co-wrote with O’Farrell.
The story follows a young William Shakespeare, played by Mescal, and Buckley as his wife Agnes (whose real name was Anne Hathaway), as she comes to terms with the loss of her 11-year-old only son, Hamnet.
Liza Marshall is producing Hamnet for Hera Pictures with Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris at Neal Street Productions and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment.
Production begins July 29 and takes place on location in Wales according to our sister site The Knowledge.
Mescal and Buckley were co-stars in Netflix's The Lost Daughter directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, however, the pair did not share screentime.
