The first contemporary television adaptation of Georges Simenon’s Inspector Jules Maigret novels has started production in Budapest, doubling the Hungarian city for Paris, France.
Jules Maigret will be played by Belgravia: The Next Chapter's Benjamin Wainwright, with Last Kingdom's Stefanie Martini as Madame Louise Maigret.
Blake Harrison, Reda Elazouar, Kerrie Hayes, Shaniqua Okwok, and Rob Kazinsky make up Maigret’s team of detectives, with Nathalie Armin set to play Prosecutor Mathilde Kernavel.
Patrick Harbinson’s adaptation reframes Maigret as an unconventional young detective with something to prove, with an uncanny ability to get under the skin of the criminals he is chasing and a matchless knowledge of Paris and its inhabitants.
Colin Callender and David Stern will executive produce for Playground, whose credits include Wolf Hall: The Mirror And The Light for the BBC and Sky's Small Town, Big Story.
Harbinson serves as lead writer, executive producer on behalf of Windhover Films, and director of the first two episodes. Faye Gilbert directs episodes three and four, and David Evans directs five and six.
Susanne Simpson serves as the executive producer for Masterpiece the lead commissioning broadcaster. John Simenon executive produces on behalf of Georges Simenon Limited. International distribution will be handled by Banijay Rights, the global sales arm of Banijay Entertainment.
