Q&A with VIP Films' owner Rafic Tamba, regional executive producer Martha Nassar

VIP Films has been around for 50 years and covers production and servicing for the Middle East. It is one of the pioneer production companies with extensive experience in the region, having been filming in and for the Saudi market for many years before launching offices in Riyadh. Have there been any new/recent developments with local studios, financial incentives, infrastructure etc, and what are the benefits of those changes for those potential clients?

MN: Dubai is emerging as a hub for innovative virtual production, with at least three new studios now offering cutting-edge virtual production and XR capabilities. VIP Films is well-acquainted with these facilities and is equipped to support any shoot in this dynamic environment.

While there have yet to be new financial incentives, the UAE impressively boasts a rich diversity of stunning locations and a talented pool of cast members, complemented by exceptional weather conditions for most of the year.

Thanks to the ongoing real estate developments in Dubai, we gain access to an ever-expanding array of unique locations daily. Moreover, Dubai is home to a wealth of experienced international professionals, specialized crews, and top-notch equipment, ensuring that every production can achieve its vision with the highest quality standards.

What is the most challenging element of a production that you have been part of, and how do you overcome those challenges?

MN: Production fundamentally revolves around control—specifically, the ability to effectively manage time, crew, and assets. Achieving this requires balancing the satisfaction and endurance of all parties involved while adhering to an increasingly demanding schedule.

As the complexities of production grow, maintaining this equilibrium becomes a more formidable challenge.

VIP Films have been challenged while shooting with celebrities on a very tight and strict schedule, which we successfully managed every time. Last shoot we worked on with Paul Pogba, production had to shoot two days prior to our initial dates, and shift everything around to accommodate to him,

What are the biggest differences between the types of productions that VIP’s works on?

MN: VIP Films has successfully produced a wide array of car commercials set against diverse backdrops, ranging from arid deserts and towering mountains to sleek modern skylines. Our casting showcases the vibrant multiculturalism of Dubai, incorporating talent from over 200 nationalities.

For car commercials, we have access to the latest Ultimate arm and cutting-edge technology. With our experienced technical crew, we are committed to continuous innovation, consistently seeking new resources to enhance all types of shoots, whether in stunning outdoor locations or state-of-the-art studios.

What should international producers know about filming in KSA?

MN: International producers embarking on filming projects abroad face many logistical, legal, and cultural challenges. When working in remote locations within the UAE, it is essential to note that all crew members will typically travel from Dubai to other UAE Emirates. This necessitates careful planning for travel times and accommodations to ensure a smooth and comfortable production process.

For shoots in protected locations, special permits will be required. VIP Films can facilitate this process, but it's essential to allow ample time for approval, as these permits often take longer than standard requests. Similarly, drone permits may also require extended approval periods.

Moreover, any foreign producer planning a shoot must partner with a production company that is registered and based in Dubai.
