Attending the Tokyo Film Festival market TIFFCOM, Television Shin-Hiroshima's manager of events and business development division Takuya Kamei spoke about the challenges facing Japanese production for overseas markets.
Kamei, who also takes part in the Content Distribution from Local Areas to Overseas panel, told KFTV that the biggest challenge facing these kinds of unique coproductions is the different broadcasting regulations between France and Japan.
Unlike traditional co-productions, TV Shin Hiroshima receives no funding from France's J-One channel for whom the content is co-produced. However, the model isn't one simply of distribution either. Post-production is completed in France, such as dubbing and voice over, he says through a translator.
This is a unique process to TV Shin Hiroshima, he says. "I haven't heard of other channels doing something like this. Big networks will simply produce and sell their content, it's not really a co-production."
For TV Shin Hiroshima, the coproduction element also exists in terms of working together to create content that will specifically work for French TV markets, rather than traditional funding.
"The goal for us is to reach the audiences abroad, to fall in love with Japanese culture. We don't try to get money from the broadcaster, but support in terms of promotion," he says.
